Soccer Field of the Year

Winner:  City of Mesquite, Eastfield Soccer Complex, Travis Sales, Parks Services Superintendent

Ground for Eastfield Soccer Complex was broken in the fall of 1972, and was opened for play in the summer of 1973. This complex includes 30 acres for various soccer field combinations and centrally located concession building with restrooms and water fountain. The current and most commonly used layout has 22 soccer fields for various age groups. Several upgrades have been made to the complex, including a computer controlled irrigation system as well as a lighting system which is controlled via the internet and even a cell phone.

The best design for the complex is having everything mobile. This allows for the rotation of the fields yearly and the start of the fall season has goalie areas on new turf that have been traffic free since June of the prior year. This also permits areas that have been recently hydromulched to be outside the areas of play and become established prior to the following June. Several conditions make it very difficult to try and launch turf and keep it looking its best at all times, but this complex is winning the battle. All of the improvements were completed in May 2005 and have solved all maintenance issues.

This complex is used 8 months out of the year for spring and fall soccer seasons. The month of June is used for renovations, even though there are numerous clinics taking place. The off-season is from November 1st through January 30th, in which no activity takes place. The spring season is comprised of 263 teams with 3,104 participants, and the spring season holds 249 teams with 2,994 participants. There are also 6-8 tournaments held each year. This complex is providing exemplary fields of the highest quality as a safe place for the community’s children to enjoy the sport of soccer.
