Turf Landscape Maintenance, 10,000 Sq. Ft. & Above

Winner:  City of Cedar Hill - Valley Ridge Park, Steve Meadors, Parks & Recreation Director

Valley Ridge Park, one of Cedar Hill’s most prized properties, opened in the fall of 1997. The 164 acre park consists of 3 football fields, 4 softball fields, 1 baseball field, 16 soccer fields, 1 outdoor amphitheater, 2 ponds, 46 natural and undeveloped acres, 3 playgrounds, and 51 acres that will be developed over the next 10 years.

Thousands of Cedar Hill citizens and those of the surrounding cities utilize the park annually, which requires an extensive maintenance schedule. Because of its large size and many diverse areas, each area of the park requires a different annual maintenance schedule and routine. Valley Ridge Park faces many challenges that include balancing field usage, field maintenance and field rest combined with unauthorized field usage. The Parks Department has made it a priority to educate users of the park of the rules in an effort to minimize the negative effects patron traffic and usage can have on the turf.

The Mayor of Cedar Hill states: "The City of Cedar Hill is renowned for its lush landscape and beautiful scenery [because] the community has rated parks and wildlife as a high priority for their quality of life. The City Council has declared Beautification of the City as one of their top priorities and in result of that, parks are always maintained at premier standards. Citizens throughout the City, as well as neighboring cities, are drawn to Cedar Hill every day to recreate and have fun at Valley Ridge Park. It is particularly utilized based on the fact that this park offers so many amenities and activities for kids and adults alike to take advantage of.  Our staff work very hard and long on keeping the parks in the City, and most particularly Valley Ridge Park, beautiful and take deep pride in how well we are perceived by citizens."
